Research Visit by a Doctoral Student from University Veracruzana, Xalapa, Mexico

International research collaboration provides opportunities to exchange knowledge and experience, explore different research approaches, and establish professional connections between researchers and institutions. PhD student Jesús Arnulf Barradas Palmeros from the University Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico, had the opportunity to take part in such an exchange. The visit to the Computer Architecture and Languages Laboratory at FERI in Maribor, Slovenia, took place from 7th September to 9th October.

The visit focused on exchanging research experience, presenting ongoing research, and exploring opportunities for future collaboration. During the visit, discussions covered current research topics, working methods, and challenges of Evolutionary Computation, Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search, and Explainable Artificial Intelligence. These meetings provided an opportunity to compare approaches, exchange ideas, and identify shared research interests.

As part of the visit, Prof. Aleš Zamuda also organised the IEEE CIS Slovenia Section Chapter, where the visiting researcher, Jesús Arnulfo Barradas Palmeros from Mexico, presented their research on Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search: Efficiency, Generalization, Algorithmic Dynamics and Explainability in DeepGA.

An important part of the visit was gaining insight into the laboratory’s day-to-day work. This provided an opportunity to learn about how research activities are organized, how laboratory members collaborate, and the similarities and differences in the working practices of the two institutions. Such exchanges help foster a better understanding of different research environments and encourage the sharing of knowledge and experience.

Overall, the research visit contributed to strengthening international connections, facilitating knowledge exchange, and exploring new opportunities for joint research activities. Direct interaction between researchers provides a valuable foundation for long-term collaboration and the development of new ideas and research initiatives.
